Ohio Justice & Policy Center

On September 8-10, 2021, the Ohio Justice & Policy Center will host a virtual conference on capital punishment.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn from legal scholars, people who were exonerated from death row, and preeminent death penalty repeal advocates, like Sister Helen Prejean and Jason Flom.

Each day, we will offer multiple educational sessions. Attorneys will have the opportunity to earn up to 11 hours of CLE credit for participation.

Keynote speaker Sister Helen Prejean will present at 6 p.m. on Sept. 9. Sister Helen is known worldwide for her tireless work against the death penalty. Sister Helen wrote the book, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, after serving as the spiritual advisor to two incarcerated individuals who were put to death in Louisiana. The book ignited a national debate on capital punishment and inspired the Academy Award-winning movie, after which, Sister Helen embarked on a speaking tour that continues to this day.

OJPC will also host a Second Chance Legal Clinic in conjunction with the conference. At this clinic, Ohioans with criminal records will get free legal assistance with record sealing, expungement, and court debt mitigation.
